Renting makes sense in Trabzon if the highlands are on your list. The coastal highway is straightforward, but the valley roads to Maçka, Çaykara and the plateaus are narrow, steep and often wet, with fog rolling in without warning. A small car is fine for the coast and the city; anything involving unpaved plateau tracks is more comfortable in an SUV.
Inside the centre, a car is usually a liability rather than a help: parking is tight and traffic on the shore road builds at peak hours. Many visitors rent for the two or three days they plan to explore inland, and use taxis or transfers the rest of the time. Automatics are less common than manuals here, and you will normally need a licence, passport and a credit card in the driver's name for the deposit.
